Coloured Orbs Beside Threads

I've seen differently coloured orbs beside threads everywhere. What do they mean?

Activity = views to comments ratio?


Black = Little to no activity
Red = Some Activity
Yellow = New thread or a moderate amount of activity
Green = Lots of activity

^ Above is just what I think they mean.
If anyone knows what the coloured orbs definitely mean I would love to know!

Yellow = New thread since last opened
Red = No new posts
Black = Probably locked

I'm not sure only about the black, you could just hover over the icon

Well your right about Green/Yellow/Red Orbs, however black is still a mystery.

If I click on a black orb, it will turn red when going to last page.

I thought maybe it has no interest it will go black.

Locked threads have a 'locked icon' which is pretty big, you can see it on the stickied threads.

Hovering my mouse over the black orbs provides nothing.

On main forum page, it shows last post 'August 3rd, 10:26am'.
So I thought it was a 'necro thread orb', however black orbs appear from even earlier today.

Does anyone know what the black orb means?

Icon shows no tooltip, but picture name is "old.png". My guess is:
Yellow = Didn't read, new thread since last opened forum
Green = Read, new post since last read
Red = Read, no new posts since last read
Black = Didn't read, but seen this thread already in previous visit

Yep that's it, I usually "stalk" every topic on general discussion so didn't have any black except for the locked topics on the top and I didn't see the locked icon on them
