what do you think the best class/build is for someone brand new to the game?

There are loads of builds that are very suitable for new players. It's more a question of what you want to do. This game has an enormous variety of skills, so it's possible to do most things. So what kind of character do you want to play?

Just a warning: this game rewards going deep into a single playstyle, so hybrid builds are generally not feasible. There are exceptions (notably a number of powerful builds that use their weapon attacks to cast spells with the Cast on Critical Strike gem), but you might be disappointed if you were hoping for an Elder-Scrolls style 'Pelt them with arrows, then sword & board when they get close' kind of thing.

i dont really care what character i play. im mostly interested in being the most profitable/powerful hero. i guess witch might be my favorite if i had to chose concept wise but i dont really care.

You can't really be super-profitable and super-powerful at once without already being mega-rich. That said, in my opinion, the best cheap farming build is dual flame totem (e.g. http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/876291), and the highest damage cheap build is cast on crit wander (e.g. http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/712837). Hopefully one of those sounds appealling.
