Character Classes

Path of Exile has three attributes, around which we have placed the character classes. All six character classes have been announced.

Strength (Red): The Marauder

Strength confers raw brute power, and is represented on weapons by high base damage. Strength armor pieces grant physical damage reduction. Monsters aligned with Strength generally hit hard and take many blows to defeat. Our announced Strength character class is the Marauder.

Dexterity (Green): The Ranger

Dexterity confers agility in combat, and is represented on weapons by faster attack speeds. Dexterity armor pieces grant the ability to evade enemy blows more often. Monsters aligned with Dexterity are nimble and difficult to hit, often attacking from a distance or with multiple weapons. Our announced Dexterity character class is the Ranger.

Intelligence (Blue): The Witch

Intelligence confers knowledge – of both arcane magic and deadly combat techniques. It is represented on weapons through improved critical strikes. Intelligence armor pieces grant the wearer a mystical energy shield which protects them from blows and can recharge when they are out of combat. Monsters aligned with intelligence are often weak spell-casters who can be dangerous if not immediately dealt with. Our announced Intelligence character class is the Witch.

Strength/Dexterity: The Duelist

The Duelist is a hybrid character class that excels at both Strength and Dexterity skills.

Strength/Intelligence: The Templar

The Templar is aligned with both Strength and Intelligence.

Dexterity/Intelligence: The Shadow

The Shadow is aligned with both Dexterity and Intelligence.

Characters, monsters and items can also be aligned with multiple attributes at once. For example, a staff weapon is generally about 70% strength and 30% intelligence. It differs from a maul (which could be 100% strength) because it is better at scoring critical strikes, but doesn't hit for as much raw physical damage.

There are three playable “hybrid” character classes in Path of Exile: The Duelist, the Templar and the Shadow.

Players can use any items or skills, providing they have enough of the relevant attribute requirements. There is the flexibility to dabble in unaligned attributes in order to use off-class skills and items. However, it is generally more efficient for players to invest in the attributes appropriate to their character class.

There should be a 7th class...
In atention to the company responsable of this game ,
Many players of the romanian community is anxious to see and play a class based on buffs and heal . This type of character would change the game experience and would make it's gameplay awesome .
In conclusion for the armony of this game and it's forword glory when the open beta and release of the game my strong piece of advice.
I present my sincere appologies if i offended someone but our community has this kind of request from a serious mmorpg.

with gratitude,

The idea of making an eight class isnt so bad. but maybe a bit unnecessary. I believe some people may are going to go allround with the seventh class because it will be suited for melee and not be explicitely strenght. also in poe you can allready build kind of everthying like you want. as soon as i get my system set up again i will try to do a strenght witch and a inteligence Marauder just because i can. I think from this perspektive since you can train every class on anything there is no real use for creating an eight one

wanna play ranger. it looks cool
This is an incredibly bad idea as it completely undermines the fundamental purpose of character classes.

Path of Exile's design allows for hybrids already which is great but the only way that a jack of all trades class would be fair is if it were inferior to all other classes in their respective specialities. If that were the case players who wanted to use the class would play victims and complain the game was unbalanced.

For interesting and fair group play each player must have both strengths and weaknesses. No one player can have everything or you lose the whole group dynamic and enter the realm of individuals doing their own thing in the same space.

The amount of support in this thread for what amounts to a game breaking idea is very worrying.

To the developers, do not follow the mistakes of other studios that sacrifice good game design principles in an attempt to create a product that appeals to everyone. I implore you to act professionally and discriminate against ill considered ideas with misguided popularity.

Considering my experience in RPG games the class that is a hybrid of all seems just useless.

That is because lets take Demons Souls for example (my favorite game of all time) If you try to make a "jack of all traits" you are doomed to get owned over and over and so on.
There is no other way to put it, although Demons Souls was very difficult even when mastering one path it is still a RPG like any other.

thing is, it IS possible in demon souls to go hybrid....sure it is harder at the beginning, but in the end you will be a 2handed/mage/tank/evader/priest(all in one)...
awesome, really.
oh and i think a 7th class would be someone with more specialnodes available at the beginning, but unable to gain max meleé/spell/ranged dmg compared to the others.

and also i would STRONGLY agree with blastmonkey, well said, brother!!

This class is still in development. They likely are trying to decide right now, as YOU read this, whether its going to be a world drop or a quest that takes you to a secret cow level!!!

It gives more class options and well, it just makes sense to be on that diagram they have. The middle just seems blank and needs a portrait in it.

that.
Grandmaster at arms? a guy who can use pretty much anything(also if you put points in all 3 stats you wont be able to max anythihng right? so i dont see it being over-powered just much more flexible), also i like the idea someone said of opposites of each class like insted of a witch you get a preist? So maby a class that depending on what stats you go for your character becomes the opposite of its equivelent STR/INTL paladin DEX/ITL night-hunter STR Martial artist(monk or w/e u wanna call it) and if u have in all well like i said you'll have alot of flexablility but many weak points as you will be lacking, for example if u go 3 way no way you will have stronger magic than a witch or maby not even than a tempest so seems to balence itself out as long as its not TOO flexible, maby limitations will be required, but i agree when people say chould be a headache to balence(FYI im not in beta im waiting as i typed this lawl)
Put that redheaded chick avatar as some suggested for sixth class ( dryad/dragon shapeshifter stuff like those ) and name it Legendary Magus/Exiled or Outcast Magus or i dont know..some epic name that can use all the stats and only be good if he knows what he's doing, the char.Gods Forsaken or idk you find a good name for the 7th class :) let's make it "not-so-lucky number 7 " wich is 10/10 difficulty to play and or level but 7-10/10 rewarding too
edit: you could also add special gems that combine str/int,str/dex, dex/int for special buff effects/damage effects/whatever,you name it
