Character Classes

Path of Exile has three attributes, around which we have placed the character classes. All six character classes have been announced.

Strength (Red): The Marauder

Strength confers raw brute power, and is represented on weapons by high base damage. Strength armor pieces grant physical damage reduction. Monsters aligned with Strength generally hit hard and take many blows to defeat. Our announced Strength character class is the Marauder.

Dexterity (Green): The Ranger

Dexterity confers agility in combat, and is represented on weapons by faster attack speeds. Dexterity armor pieces grant the ability to evade enemy blows more often. Monsters aligned with Dexterity are nimble and difficult to hit, often attacking from a distance or with multiple weapons. Our announced Dexterity character class is the Ranger.

Intelligence (Blue): The Witch

Intelligence confers knowledge – of both arcane magic and deadly combat techniques. It is represented on weapons through improved critical strikes. Intelligence armor pieces grant the wearer a mystical energy shield which protects them from blows and can recharge when they are out of combat. Monsters aligned with intelligence are often weak spell-casters who can be dangerous if not immediately dealt with. Our announced Intelligence character class is the Witch.

Strength/Dexterity: The Duelist

The Duelist is a hybrid character class that excels at both Strength and Dexterity skills.

Strength/Intelligence: The Templar

The Templar is aligned with both Strength and Intelligence.

Dexterity/Intelligence: The Shadow

The Shadow is aligned with both Dexterity and Intelligence.

Characters, monsters and items can also be aligned with multiple attributes at once. For example, a staff weapon is generally about 70% strength and 30% intelligence. It differs from a maul (which could be 100% strength) because it is better at scoring critical strikes, but doesn't hit for as much raw physical damage.

There are three playable “hybrid” character classes in Path of Exile: The Duelist, the Templar and the Shadow.

Players can use any items or skills, providing they have enough of the relevant attribute requirements. There is the flexibility to dabble in unaligned attributes in order to use off-class skills and items. However, it is generally more efficient for players to invest in the attributes appropriate to their character class.

Will the classes be gender locked?
Having a locked gender is such a small thing, wouldn't you rather them focus on making the game rather than just graphic changes?
Also, you should not be that, for lack of a better word, insecure, that you cannot have fun with a game with a class you love just because the gender is different to what you wanted. Basically, if you like the game and the style of the class you have, graphics shouldn't matter because the game play's where it's at.
Even though D2 and Torchlight had noch gender choice (and I enjoyed these games too) imho it is state of time to have the choice, and we are just talking/ asking for gender difference. Nobody is asking for an individualization of the look ;o)
This is actually pretty important to me. I realize that some people don't care but I prefer not playing a woman if possible, as I'm sure that some don't like playing men. I hope they consider going with both options, it really shouldn't be that difficult to implement.

Well I will admit it; I played exclusively as the Rogue in Diablo 1. As far as I am concerned, the Rogue was imbued with the best combination of skills

Amended - so I will play with whatever class has the best combination of skills for my gameplay style regardless of gender.
I now have Beta access; best of luck to all on getting your own key!

Personally I would enjoy having the choice of gender for each character. Path of Exile is an action-rpg. While the action part certainly doesn't suffer from not being able to choose the gender of a character - the rpg-part will. I think the game would be enhanced having no gender-locked characters.
For the sake of the discussion I tallied up the responses. Each is listed under a single category alone, hence those who said something along the lines of "it would be cool, but I have no problem with it" might equally well fit into both the "Prefer an Option" and "No Problem" groups, yet they were listed in only one. For the record, I placed said individuals into the latter, as their opinion seems to indicate that it is not an issue they would be particularly incensed over.

Dislike Genderlocked Classes = 8
Prefer an Option of Gender = 25
No Problem with Genderlock = 29

Also, interestingly, I noticed that a grand total of six posts were in vocal favor of GGG monetizing the option.

Maybe they'll be cosmetic options that you have to pay for?

That would be a first, in my experience, and a mistake, in my opinion.

In just about every way, I think lore outweighs character choice, to such a level, that choice almost becomes unimportant.
The lack of lore in this game is a major issue. Classes being represented by both genders....not so much.

Your response intrigues me, if only as I've no idea how gender affects lore whatsoever. Does it matter if the writer for any specific passage pens "he" or "she" in the story? If you swap a "Witch" for a "Warlock" or make "him" rather than "her" the protagonist? I hardly think so.

Or do you merely mean to imply that options such as gender ought to be prioritized less than the necessity of adding further lore?

I don't really care about choosing gender. I'm not the type of person to be bothered by something stupid as that.

I find it astonishing that someone with such an open-minded opinion is the first to dub those who think otherwise as "stupid."

LoJackATK: see above.

Also, you should not be that, for lack of a better word, insecure, that you cannot have fun with a game with a class you love just because the gender is different to what you wanted.

Don't be condescending, mate.
Preference does not equate to insecurity.

the game will start sooner, and run more smoothly without wasting time to add in something stupid, AND its F2P so.. shutup.

You take the prize for most offensive reply of the bunch. Brilliantly mature argument, as well, I might add: if someone else has a conflicting opinion, don't both acknowledging any potential merit, just tell them to shut up.
Really, brilliant...

Personally, I fall within the camp of those who prefer the option. I do not, however, have a problem with a lack thereof; indeed, I've often chosen female avatars in non-genderlocked games and list several female characters in both multiplayer and singleplayer games as among my favorite of all time (Zoe Castillo of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, Jade of Beyond Good & Evil, Kate Archer of No One Lives Forever, Samus Aran of Metroid, Mona Sax of Max Payne 2, SHODAN of System Shock and on, and on, and on...).

Having said that, I firmly believe the choice ought to be available. I could recite the myriad justifications that have already been raised (for the sake of roleplaying or immersion, for the sheer customization, for allowing greater differentiation between characters, et al), however, this post is rapidly becoming a wall of text, hence, I'll draw it to a close.

EDIT: Updated to account for Decrazymonkeyking's opinion and, in an oversight, my own.
