you're reading into it too hard, the game (and coding) is overly literal 90% of the time and this isn't the 10% left over. the degeneration isn't a cost. "cost" is a liberty of understanding, not a mechanic of cost.
you'll still block (and evade and dodge) while stunned or blocking animation. if you get re-"stunned", then you just get a new animation cycle then and there. players can get stunlocked just as easily as monsters can (with enough of them around and low enough player hp).
or make the deadzone a fixed AoE size, as in doesn't change on AoE boosts?
